Weekly Report 44

The Sea-Eye 4 rescue ship saved the lives of nearly 400 people on Wednesday (November 3) as part of six separate operations. The vessel picked up another 400 people in the past 24 hours. In a statement, Sea-Eye said that several people were found on the scene already in the water [...]

INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY CALL

Mediterranea Saving Humans is under attack in Italy. Several members of Mediterranea are accused by the Office of Public Prosecutor of Ragusa of “facilitating illegal immigration.” It is definitely not the first time that such an accusation has been used to criminalize civil migrant rescue operations at sea [...]

THE humanitarian crisis IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

The situation in the Central Mediterranean

Thousands of people are trying to reach Europe from northern Africa, escaping from a war or leaving a condition of extreme poverty. They are victims of criminals who rob, rape, detain and torture them for months before letting them take the sea on rafts . They can hardly sail a few miles, eventually sinking in the Mediterranean sea, or being captured again by the same torturers they escaped from.

A dramatic death toll

It is difficult, if not impossible, to get a precise count of the number of lives lost: people taking the sea have high chances not to get to the end. Institutions are mostly indifferent and somewhat complicit by avoiding a coordinated rescue effort. United Nations counted more than 22 thousand deaths since 2014.

Who comes in rescue, and who doesn't

European governments, riding the populist and xenophobic waves, interrupted all coordinated rescue programs. The Italian government has introduced inhuman legislation, putting fines to whom saves lives at sea, against the mandatory rules of International Laws. Mediterranea Saving Humans is there where is most needed, in the Central Mediterranean,

to monitor and rescue human lives.

WHAT CAN BE DONE

Saving Humans USA supports Mediterranea, the nonprofit organization operating in the central Mediterranean to monitor, witness, and report the conditions in which women, men, and children constantly face enormous dangers in the absence of organized relief operations.
Mediterranea's ships are sailing under the flag of Italy and its operations are conducted in full respect and observance of 1. the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 2. any other applicable International Laws
[Article 98 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the SeaEvery State shall require the master of a ship flying its flag:(a) to render assistance to any person found at sea in danger of being lost;(b) to proceed with all possible speed to the rescue of persons in distress, if informed of their need of assistance, in so far as such action may reasonably be expected of him]
Saving the lives of migrants in distress at sea is a moral and legal obligation; we must convince governments and international institutions to immediately establish humanitarian corridors and to address the general issue with new migration policies based on the full respect of human rights. We won't abandon the waters till then.

Our vision: #OPENBORDERS

We dream of a World where people in need of help can safely travel from one Country to another without being detained, raped and tortured due to the color of their skin or their economic conditions. We dream of a World where the travel for a better future won’t cause the loss of anyone’s life
